A higher – but more uncertain – rate of sea-level rise is observed for more recent years. The current best estimate of the average rate of sea-level rise during the observational period from 1872 to 2019 based on tide-gauge data after removal of subsidence effects is 1.23 ± 0.13 mm/year. Subsidence contributed to about half of the historical relative sea-level rise in Venice. This literature review reassesses and synthesizes the progress achieved in quantification, understanding and prediction of the individual contributions to local relative sea level, with a focus on the most recent studies. In the past ∼150 years, this was characterized by an average rate of relative sea-level rise of about 2.5 mm/year resulting from the combined contributions of vertical land movement and sea-level rise.
The city of Venice and the surrounding lagoonal ecosystem are highly vulnerable to variations in relative sea level. a now at: PosiTim UG, Seeheim-Jugenheim, GermanyĬorrespondence: Davide Zanchettin Hide author detailsĬorrespondence: Davide Zanchettin Received: – Discussion started: – Revised: – Accepted: – Published:.18 LIENSs, CNRS–La Rochelle University, 2 rue Olympe de Gouges, 17000 La Rochelle, France.17 Institute of Biophysics, CNR, AREA Ricerca, Via Moruzzi 1, 56127 Pisa, Italy.16 Marine Research Institute, Klaipeda University, Klaipeda, Lithuania.15 School of Law, City University of Hong Kong, Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon, Hong Kong.14 Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières “BRGM”, French Geological Survey, 3 Avenue, Claude Guillemin, CEDEX, 45060 Orléans, France.13 ENEA Casaccia, Climate and Impact Modeling Lab, SSPT-MET-CLIM, Via Anguillarese 301, 00123 Rome, Italy.12 Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ, United Kingdom.11 ISMAR – Marine Sciences Institute, CNR – National Research Council of Italy, Castello 2737/F, 30122 Venice, Italy.10 Department of Earth Sciences, University of Rome La Sapienza, Piazzale Aldo Moro 5, 00185 Rome, Italy.Frascati, SSPT-MET, Via Enrico Fermi 45, 00044 Frascati, Italy 8 Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, via di Vigna Murata 605, 00143 Rome, Italy.Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, RAS, 30, Pervaya Liniya, 199053, St. 6 Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Alfred Wegener Institute, Postfach 12-01-61, 27515, Bremerhaven, Germany.5 National Centre for Atmospheric Science, University of Reading, Reading, UK.4 Deptartment of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Technologies, Unversità del Salento, Centro Ecotekne Pal.
